Domestic Partnerships

Morristown, New Jersey Domestic Partnerships Attorneys

New Jersey domestic partnerships laws are a relatively recent legal occurrence. At Cutler, Townsend, Tomaio & Newmark , we are at the forefront of domestic partnership laws. Our lawyers handle a wide variety of cases throughout northern and central New Jersey including the counties of Morris, Somerset, Essex, Union, Hunterdon, Bergen, Passaic, Sussex, Warren, Mercer, Middlesex, and Monmouth.

In the current political environment, when most people think about domestic partnerships they think about same-sex couples. However, our lawyers have successfully negotiated settlements for couples living together without a legal marriage who have acquired assets and debts during their relationship. When these unions separate, regardless of sexual orientation, they face the same issues as married couples, except there are fewer statutes and less case law to determine the disposition of support, their respective assets as well as any joint assets.

The experience our attorneys have dealing with divorce law translates well into handling domestic partnership cases. Our firm has handled a significant number of these matters, with issues often involving palimony, distribution of debts, property division, child custody, and child support.

One of our attorneys is in the for front of successfully handling domestic partnership disputes.  Dominic A. Tomaio, Esq. , is a partner in the firm and is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law attorney.  He is the author of Chapter 14 (dealing with support and asset division between unmarried cohabitants) of the 5-Volume New Jersey Family Law Practice. (Co-authored by our founding partner, Laurence J. Cutler.)

We stress resolving domestic partnership issues using alternative dispute resolution techniques such as mediation and arbitration. However, when our attorneys cannot resolve these issues through negotiation we aggressively represent our clients’ issues in court.

If you are currently involved in a domestic partnership dispute,  contact Cutler, Townsend, Tomaio & Newmark. We are one of the largest law firms in New Jersey devoted exclusively to matrimonial and domestic partnership law.
